weather, pitches and eight people

Camping trip scheduling

Two pitches booked for six people who turned into three is a specific kind of annoying.

For a camping trip, settle the weekend before booking pitches: sites price and allocate by group size, and campsites in season fill months ahead. Propose three or four weekends across the season, ask for firm answers rather than intentions, and book once the count is stable. Who can when? collects the answers free, with no account needed by anyone in the group.

Free, and nobody needs an account.

Season, not just dates

Offer weekends spread across the season rather than clustered in one month. Early and late in the season are far less contested, cheaper, and often the only ones where the site you want has space for a group.

Bank holidays look attractive and are the hardest to book, the most expensive and the most crowded. Include one if you must, but include two alternatives beside it.

Ask these alongside the date

  • Who has a tent and how many it sleeps. It decides how many pitches you book.
  • Who is driving and who needs a lift, which quietly determines whether some people can come at all.
  • Arriving Friday night or Saturday morning, because it changes the booking.
  • Anyone bringing children or a dog, since not every site takes both.
  • A wet-weather answer. Deciding in advance is much easier than deciding in a downpour.

Firm answers beat enthusiastic ones

Camping attracts a lot of soft yeses - it sounds great in March. Say plainly in the description that you are booking pitches on a named day and that a yes after that means a share of the cost. The count you get will be smaller and much more accurate.

Common questions

How far ahead should I ask?
Two to three months for peak season, longer for a bank holiday weekend or a popular site.
Can I use the same poll to sort out lifts?
Use the comments for it. Answers and the logistics thread stay in one place that way.
What if the weather forecast turns?
Reopen the poll and add alternative weekends. Everyone who answered is told once.
