For a recreational sports team, the scheduling question is usually whether enough players can make a given date rather than which date is best. Who can when? answers it by showing a live count of yes, maybe and no under each proposed date, so you can see whether you have a side before you pay for the pitch. It is free and needs no accounts.
The number is the whole point
Most teams do not need the best date, they need a date with enough players on it. That is a counting problem, and counting is what a grid does. Under each date is how many said yes, how many said maybe and how many said no.
Maybe earns its place here more than anywhere: a five-a-side with three yeses and four maybes is a game, and a group chat would never have told you that.
How teams use it
- Post the next four fixtures at once rather than one at a time.
- Set the deadline before the booking deadline, not on the day.
- Let players add dates if the fixture list is not fixed.
- Keep comments on for the "I can play but not in goal" contingent.
When you are short
You will see it early, which is the difference between calling in a ringer and cancelling. Add dates, chase the maybes - the ones who said maybe are by definition the ones worth chasing - and pick when the number is there.
